As food shopping methods evolve, manufacturers and retailers are responding with several different models - with click and collect, home delivery and pure play (direct shipping of items purchased online) among the predominant examples so far. According to the report, “The Digitally Engaged Shopper,” 23 percent of American households recently have been buying food online, an increase of four percentage points from the 2014 penetration level. In a 2017 report, the Food Marketing Institute and Nielsen noted expectations for grocery retailing to be the next industry reshaped by digital platforms. “Because most Meijer stores are open 24 hours a day, customers can choose delivery times most convenient for them, which gives people the flexibility to shop and receive orders very early in the morning or late at night,” Hirschmugl said. Last week, Grand Rapids-based SpartanNash rolled out Fast Lane - a “click and collect” service involving online grocery ordering and curbside pickup – at two of its Northern Michigan supermarkets, D&W Fresh Market in Petoskey and Family Fare in Gaylord.
